This blog is for the Conlon Cousins to share activities and events of their families. It is also where genealogy postings will provide us with "links" to the past.
All family members are welcome to post news, information, announcements, questions, family tales... Perhaps sharing recollections of growing up in Sturgeon Bay or our memories of our youth in the Conlon Clan would be interesting. Each family member can post information and pictures by simply sending an email to a special blog address and it will be immediately posted. That address will be sent to you on request. We can set the site to be restricted to only "authorized" individuals or leave it open.
We can set up restricted access to family contact lists. Lots of possibilities!!!

Join the fun and post some stuff...

According to comments made by Rose Conlon Fuller in the 1970s, Catherine Propsom had her right hand and forearm crushed in a wringer when she was about 7 or 8 years old. In later life she elected to have that portion of her arm removed. In this photo Catherine appears to be covering/supporting that hand.

Katherine Kartheiser Propsom's Right Arm Mystery

The photo below shows Catherine Kartheiser Propsom, right, mother of Jennie Propsom Conlon, in front of her home on Jefferson St and N. 7th Ave. It was next to her son Matt's home. Both homes are there today, although they are no longer residences but shops. Catherine's home eventually became the home of Lizzy and Margaret, her daughters. Catherine' youngest daughter Tillie Propsom (B 4 Mar 1885, D 13 Oct 1940) is in the back and Mary Propsom Puehler (B 9 Feb 1872, D 14 June 1952), the oldest daughter is on the left. In discussing this with Pat Conlon Walter, we believe the photo was taken in the early 1930's. Note the enlarged section of the photo showing what appears to be Catherine's right hand on Tillie's left arm.  ...but Catherine's hand and forearm were crushed in a wringer when she was young and she elected to have it removed when she got older. That information came from Rose Conlon Fuller many years ago. The mystery continues.

Catherine would be in her 80s at the time the photo was taken. We are estimating that this photo was taken around 1930 or 1931.  The photo was also taken in front of Catherine's Jefferson Street home.

To You, Aunt Mary!

A Toast to Aunt Mary
Click on the image to see it larger
Following the funeral of Aunt Mary Conlon, the cousins (grandchildren of John and Jennie) and their spouses drank a toast to Aunt Mary while listening to "Danny Boy" on the juke box and we captured it.  Look closely to find Aunt Mary in the photo.

Spontaneous 2010 Conlon Reunion

Many of the Conlon cousins and spouses attended Aunt Mary's funeral today. Following the luncheon we all had a nice visit and thought we'd consider it this years gathering/reunion. Pat and Anita had left before these photos were taken but we got them in the "Toast" group photo.

An interesting photo...

Check out how it was made
During a recent visit to Sturgeon Bay we discovered this picture in the basement of St Joseph's Church.  The large picture on the wall is made up of minitures of all the parishioners of the church who had their pictures taken for the church booklet - pretty cool.  We found Aunt Pat in about a dozen places.

Conlon Reunion 2010 CANCELLED

Hi Cousins,

Seems as though there are too many conflicts with the Conlon Reunion date this year and it has been canceled. Only 8 people besides Helen and Dan and Anita and I were able to attend. It just didn't make sense to hold the event with only 12 people. Please share this info with your family and those that don't have e-mail.

We'll pass the packet to Aunt Catherine's family and they can try again when the time is right.

Relatives Donate for New Church

Pat Conlon Walter sent a copy of the 1912 Silver Jubilee booklet for Rev Alph. Broens from St Joseph's Church in Sturgeon Bay.  It included an accounting of the building fund for the New Church Building - the current church which had it's first official service on November 28,1909. Below is the summary costs and expenses and total received.  You will be pleased to know that John Conlon donated $31.  Jenny Propsom Conlon's siblings donated as follows: Matt Propsom $35; Tillie Propsom (church organist) $50; Elizabeth Propsom (Rev Broens' housekeeper) $32 and Margaret Propsom $10. Their mother, Katherine Kartheiser Propsom (who only had one arm) donated $73.  Of course this was all over 100 years ago.

Bart Conlon Obit

Click on image to see it larger

Pat Conlon Walter sent this clipping from the Door County Advocate.  It is the obituary of Bart Conlon, father of John Conlon Sr,

Additional details:
Bartholomew "Bart" Conlon was born 1831 in Rathangan County Kildare Ireland. He moved to Canada in about 1835. Bart married Mathilda Thompson in Canada and moved to Door County.  Son John was born in Jacksonport, 13 July 1881. John married Jenny Propsom, 10 January 1905.  Mathilda died 5 September 1883 when John was 2 years old.  John was raised by his Uncle Thomas Brooks and Aunt Rose Ann (Conlon) Brooks, taking on the name Brooks until just before getting married when he officially changed it back to Conlon when he was about 21 - When I find that document I'll post it. Bart lived until September 1916, 23 years beyond Mathilda. Two of his children died before his death.

I have connected with Audrey Jacques Cappelle via Facebook and she has sent me some corrections for her family information in the Jacques - Nick Conlon (John's brother) line.  See previous posting Conlon - Conlin - Conlier...

John and Jennie Celebrate Their 50th

John Conlon and Jennie Propsom were married 10 January 1905 at St. Joseph's Church in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.  They celebrated their 50th Anniversary in 1955 in Sturgeon Bay.  Below is the Door County article describing the event.  The clipping is from Pat Conlon Walter, their youngest daughter. The wedding invitation is from Bob Fuller, son of Rose Conlon Fuller, their oldest daughter.

Flowers a Bloomin' in Sister Bay

Pat Conlon sent these pictures of how their yard looked recently with the Spring Bloom.  They've planted over 11,600 bulbs and more to come as they're able. Absolutely amazing! Pat says: "I started planting daffodils back in 1984 after we moved in.  First 4000 went in with  Door Co. crowbar - since then an auger is the tool of choice - still not easy in DC rock.  I usually add about 400 a year - they do multiply, but some eventually die off - so each year I stake out where the new ones are to go and then plant them in late September.  It's just something we do for our enjoyment, but quite a few community folks know about it and enjoy driving by this time of the year." Conlon - Conlan - Conlin - Conlier

Doing a little genealogy research today with the help of buddy Roger.  Found that Conlon, Conlan (thanks, Pat) and Conlin are interchangeable.  We also discovered that Conlons were called Conlier in the 1880 US Census for Door County, Jacksonport Township. Page 36B lines 31-37 --about 2/3 down the page. This is where the handwriting of the Census person who wrote the info can make a difference. Check out the actual page.

The 1880 listing starts with V Conlier and this was actually B Conlon (Bartholomew) age 45,.  It lists his wife Matilda, (b. Canada) 35 and children Thomas  (b. Canada)10, Peter (b. Canada) 8, Catherine (b. Wisconsin) 6, Willie (Will, William) (b. Wisconsin) 4 and Nicholas (Nick) (b. Wisconsin) 2.  John - our grandfather was not born until 1881 and therefore doesn't show up in the 1880 Census. Matilda died in 1883, two years after giving birth to our grandfather John and leaving 6 children. Knowing this name difference may now lead to further information.  We have also located postings where others have been searching for Bartholomew and his Irish parents.  The main person searching is Audrey Jacques Cappelle.  Audrey would be our age and is the daughter of Lillian Conlon and Orville Jacques.  Lillian is the daughter of  Nick and Nick and John were brothers. I will make a contact and see where it leads.

On the same page you will find Thomas Brooks 45 who married Rose (Rosiaw) Ann Conlon 45, sister to Bartholomew. This was the family that raised our grandfather John. John was raised as John Brooks and later changed his name to John Conlon prior to his marriage to Jennie Propsom. The Brooks and Conlons (Conliers) appear on the same page of the census as they lived near each other as farmers. Eventually, Nick Conlon farmed the same land near Jacksonport and I have the 1914 Plat map showing the partials.

The actual 1880 census page can be accessed by Clicking Here When on the page, you can enlarge the image by changing the size in the upper left. Here's a better image of that content - Click here

This is the same census page. Click on the image below to enlarge.
Here is the content of a posting we found and will followup on it.
I have no idea if this means anything or not but I have this: Bartholomew Conlin. bap 1831 married Mathilda Thompson They had the following children: John, Thomas, Nicholas, Catherine, Peter and William. Bartholmew's parents were Bartholmew and Caterine Orford/Alford. The children were all bap in the RC parish of Kildare and Rathangan Co. Kildare, Ire. I have more on this line if it is something you need, I will do a better job with sequencing and send it to you. Thanks, Carole

Well see if this gets through as it is my third time trying.  Nice job, Bob.  Thanks for all your work.  Hopefully, we all use the blog to send wedding announcements, grandbaby pictures etc.  Once we all get the hang of it ( with our kids help) it will be fun.

Conlon Reunions Past

Click on a picture to see it larger.

The 2009 Reunion was held at Otumba Park in Sturgeon Bay on Saturday, June 27, 2009.  It was an overcast day but like always, that didn't dampen our spirits. The John Conlon Jr. family hosted.

A beautiful day for the 2008 Conlon Reunion - Sunset Park in Sturgeon Bay.  The Rose Conlon Fuller family hosted. That's Bob, Pat, Bob and Jim in the back. Mary Beth, Connie, Pat, Mary, Joan and Ann are in the middle.  Tom, Helen, Charlie and Steve are the headliners up front.

This was a very special 2006 Reunion hosted by the Pat Conlon Walter family. It was the 80th Celebration.  I don't see anyone in this picture that could be that age.  Another Otumbwa Park party on an overcast day.  Do you remember who was the last to arrive?

WOW, check out all those creative costumes. Looks like Pat's Pinheads (is that the right name?)
won the attendance award. They hosted this one.
